As a Mid-level Software Engineer, you will take ownership of full-stack features, guiding them from initial concepts and experiments through to deployment and ongoing iteration. The role blends hands-on software development with crucial product thinking, user research, and close collaboration with designers and various stakeholders. You'll be instrumental in solving complex challenges at the intersection of technology, user experience, safety, and scalable peer-to-peer learning.

Key Responsibilities & Duties
- Collaborate closely with users, teammates, designers, and stakeholders to deeply understand problems, generate innovative product ideas, and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Own full-stack features from initial prototypes and experiments through to production deployment, continuous iteration, and ongoing refinement.
- Scope technical work, evaluate various tradeoffs, and make informed implementation decisions, leveraging support from experienced engineers when necessary.
- Build intuitive and reliable features that effectively address learner and tutor needs while ensuring a safe and high-quality user experience.
- Write simple, readable, and maintainable code that can gracefully evolve as the product and user base continue to grow.
- Contribute to new product initiatives and experiments, including developing tools that enhance tutoring, improve learner-to-tutor connections, and bolster platform safety.
- Actively participate in code reviews and pairing sessions to uphold engineering quality standards and facilitate knowledge sharing across the team.
- Collaborate effectively across product, design, operations, and engineering teams to advance projects in a fast-paced environment where priorities can evolve quickly.
- Take ownership of problems extending beyond your immediate technical scope when doing so can lead to better outcomes for users.
Requirements & Qualifications
- 3+ years of professional experience as a full-stack software engineer, with a demonstrated track record of building and shipping full-stack features.
- Proficiency with TypeScript, Node.js, React, Next.js, and PostgreSQL, or a proven ability to quickly become productive with these technologies.
- Ability to clearly explain technical and product tradeoffs and demonstrate sound reasoning behind implementation decisions.
- Strong user orientation, with the ability to understand user needs and translate them into practical product and engineering solutions.
- Capability to move quickly while maintaining a high standard of code quality, maintainability, and reliability.
- Comfortable working independently, identifying gaps, proactively asking for help when appropriate, and taking initiative to solve problems.
- Willingness to contribute beyond a narrowly defined role when doing so can better serve users.
- Availability to work within a U.S. time zone.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, empathy, and problem-solving skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Deep experience with TypeScript, Node.js, React, Next.js, PostgreSQL, AWS, and GCP.
- Prior experience developing mobile applications.
- Background in education, ed-tech, or products designed for learning and tutoring.
